Glow in the dark art supplies to make your kids' art POP!

Apr 15, 2024

Do you remember the first time you saw something glow in the dark? Maybe it was under a black light, or maybe it was a glow stick outside. Maybe you got to see a recent eclipse with the sun's corona shining around the moon. Or maybe it was just seeing myriads of fireflies by the road or in your backyard some summer night.

Whatever it was, seeing things glow in the dark is magical.

Want to create a special luminous memory for your kids? You may not have these art supplies already at home, but they are worth having because they are the key to creating lots of unusual and fun art.

Start with just one or two art supplies, and you can add more as your kids get excited about creating.

The first special art supply will do double duty for science experiments and Halloween decorations. It is simply a little black light flashlight. Get a black light  and throw it in the drawer to pull out whenever you need it. My granddaughters and I had a lot of fun with this little light over the weekend. Just be sure kids don't shine it in their eyes while using it. These are inexpensive and so fascinating.
There are many art supplies that you can use with your black light.

When buying art supplies, you want to look for the words “fluorescent,” “neon,” or “glow in the dark.”

Whether you are drawing space pictures or anything else, kids' interest and creativity will ramp up with these fun supplies. Here are ideas to get you started:

Neon oil pastels -very easy and fun to use

Markers-so easy to decorate lots of planets and rockets with these

Pan tempera paint-this is expensive, but the beauty is it lasts forever and isn’t as messy as liquid paint. Plus it requires no pouring paint into a pallet or plate-just put it out and kids can use with water, like pan watercolor, but it isn't transparent like watercolor.

Acrylic paints -good for projects needing thicker application of paint, but messier than any of the above

Puffy paint-great for 3D effects- super fun to use-you can paint fabrics, too

Face crayons A great addition to a birthday or space party or costume!

What can you do with your glow-in-the-dark art supplies and a black light flashlight?

  1. Start with black or dark blue or purple construction paperGet neon oil pastels out and encourage your kids to draw a space picture complete with shooting stars, different sized planets, galaxies, rockets, etc. Use the technique of rubbing and blending around circles to create a glowy effect. Shine the black light on it in a dark room.
  2. Start with any color paper. Use paint to make a space picture as in #1. Shine the black light on it and add details where needed. Add puffy paint to your design to make 3-D lines stand out on your planets.

Happy reading and drawing!
