It's that time of year when we start to look for good gift ideas for our elementary kids and grandkids. We want to gift them something meaningful, long lasting, and helpful to them as they grow in their interests. But also we want the gifts to be fun!
Here are a few of my favorite things for gift ideas related to art and reading for elementary aged kids:

Picture Books worth buying, reading over and over, and owning:
Obviously, there are a million more we love. But here are a few I’ve chosen for variety and unique appeal.
Dragonology by Dr. Ernest Drake
Knight Owl by Christopher Denise
Sixteen Cows by Lisa Wheeler and Curt Cyrus
Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch by Trina Hakes Noble and Tony Ross
Home by Carson Ellis
Grand Canyon by Jason Chin
I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean by Kevin Sherry
Humphrey’s First Christmas by Carol Heyer
To Make by Danielle Davis
Classic Chapter Books for reading aloud:
Note: several of these have been made into movies. I highly recommend the books, and do not necessarily recommend any of the movies. The beauty of these stories is in the storytelling of the author’s voice. Some are funny, some are poignant, all are well written and classics.
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Classic Fairy Tales by Scott Gustafson
The Tale of Desperaux by Kate DiCamillo
The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare
Keeper of the Bees by Gene Stratton Porter
The Borrowers by Mary Norton
Henry and Ribsy Boxed Set by Beverly Cleary
The Wrinkle in Time Boxed Set Quintet by Madeleine L’Engle
The Penderwicks Boxed Set by Jeanne Birdsall
My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George
Creativity Kits/Toys:
Creativity for the littlest ones:
Stacking Rocks- for toddlers
Craftikit 20 Animal Toddler arts and crafts
The next group of gifts are great for kids 5-8 and up. Usually you can find a kit that is either broad enough to include all interests (like marbled paper), or can be chosen according to your child’s specific interests (like dinosaurs or jewelry-making.) Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Glow in the Dark 3D puff paint (use on fabric, wood, paper, rocks, etc.)
Black Light Flashlight-for admiring all the glow in the dark artwork!
Classic Legos Starter Set-all kids need to get started building
Wooden Magnet Decorating Set-uses markers and stickers, not paint
Illustory-a kit to write your own book!
Favorite Art Supplies to cultivate creativity:
It’s great to have the regular old crayons and crayola markers in your art supply boxes, but how inspiring to have the upgraded special ones! Here are a few great art supplies I either gave my own kids for gifts, or like to use for Storygalorey lessons:
Crayola Education Mixing Set of Watercolors
Faber-Castell Gel Crayons-like coloring with lipstick!
Kwik Stix-similar to gel crayons, these are a non-messy paintstick
Water Soluble Crayons-includes a brush-just draw with crayons, then brush with plain water
Travel Watercolors-A little travel watercolor set perfect for painting anywhere!
Metallic Markers-so fun to use-they work great on colored paper
Mixed Media Sketchbook- I use this myself for collages and sketches, and frequently gave my kids sketchbooks for Christmas to encourage creativity all year long.
I hope this list sparks lots of creativity and joy as you lead your children and grandkids to keep doing art and reading at home!
